All the info is provided below from the Department of Canadian Heritage:
Proudly presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Challenge invites youth between 8 and 18 years old who live in Canada to express their pride in being Canadian by submitting an entry inspired by the theme STRONG. PROUD. FREE.
Enter the contest in the following categories:
-DRAW IT! (submit a poster design)
-SNAP IT! (submit digital photographs)
-WRITE IT! (submit a piece of creative writing)
Participation can be through schools, clubs, associations, or individual interest!
On the road to Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, the Canada Day Challenge is an excellent opportunity for young people to explore Canada’s history, culture and identity and to celebrate everything that makes Canada the strong, proud and free country it is today.
This year, we also encourage youth to learn more about the defining moments that helped to shape our country. For example, February 15, 2015, will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada. This special Flag Day is the perfect opportunity to learn more about how our flag was created and what it means to us.
Prizes:
Winners from across Canada will be selected for a chance to win great prizes from our partners. Winning entries will also be displayed at the Canadian Museum of History from June to September 2015.
Nine national finalists (three from each category) will win an all-expenses paid grand prize trip for two to Ottawa to visit Canada’s national institutions and to celebrate Canada Day 2015 on Parliament Hill, as well as visit exciting sites in the National Capital region.
Check out pictures from last year's grand prize trip online! It was an unforgettable time for our national winners. They were given VIP access to exciting places and they got to meet some of Canada's most inspiring personalities, including the Governor General of Canada, singer Nadja, singer-impersonator Véronic DiCaire, and Serena Ryder! On July 1st, they were treated to VIP seating for both the Canada Day Noon Show and the iconic Evening Show and fireworks display.
And, there’s more! One lucky winner* in the Write It! category will be invited to spend a week in Ottawa with our partner, Encounters with Canada, Canada’s largest youth forum, to learn about Canadian institutions, explore exciting career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary bilingual experience! (*For participants between the ages of 14 and 17 only.)
The Canada Day Challenge is open now and will accept submissions until March 20, 2015.

Movember Literacy Mania!
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1416942290.png)
Our school was very fortunate to have volunteers come in to read to our classes for Movember Literacy Mania! 3D had a hilarious Robert Munch book read to them by Mr. Dave Toner. He was a very engaging reader, who did a fabulous job of encouraging the students to READ! READ! READ! So not only did we have our library volunteer read to us today, we had a second one come in this afternoon! 3D loves having special guests visit the class!
Happy Kindness Week from Gr. 3Dufour!
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1416942976.png)
This week is Kindness Week (formerly Anti-Bullying Week) at CDT and all around the District and Province as well! To bring awareness to this trait, the students of CDT will come together at an assembly on Friday. At the assembly, a unique 'Kindness Quilt' quilt that the students put together will be unveiled! Throughout the week, students will participate in discussions and activities that focus on kindness. Check back by Friday to see a photo of the finished product of our very own class quilt square!
Ici on parle le francais!
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1416849703.png)
Every year, I try come up with an effective way to reward students for (trying to) speak French in class. Rewarding students helps to encourage them to continue trying! During structured French instruction, students can earn 50/50 tickets for participation. Once a week, names are drawn for small incentive prizes. The more tickets a student acquires, the better chance they have of winning a prize!
When students make an extra effort to speak French to teachers and classmates on their own during unstructured time, I simply punch a hole on their cool new "Je parle francais" punchcards! Once all the holes are punched in their card, they can earn a reward of their choice. The class brainstormed possible rewards last week and came up with some great ideas! Here are a few examples:
Sit at the teacher's desk for a day
40 minutes of free time
Be the teacher for 40 minutes
Help Mrs. Betts out with a younger phys ed class
Help Mrs. Briggs out with a younger art class
Wear a hat in class
Chew gum in class
Earn ten 50/50 tickets
Stay inside with a friend for both recesses
Help out at the office
Bring a game or a toy to school
Plan a 40 minute Phys Ed lesson
*Also, all completed cards will be placed in a draw at the end of the year for a prize! from Scholastic!

2013-2014
GR 3's are GREAT CITIZENS!
A few of our students built up the courage and confidence to talk during our last assembly about what it means to be a good citizen. Citizenship was the Character Trait for the month of April. Some students read in English, while others were even brave enough to talk to the ENTIRE school in French! BRAVO!
Like Student, Like Teacher!

In Grade 3, we talk A LOT about our likes and dislikes, so my students are very aware of my love for hippos! I am delighted to say that I can now BE a hippo with my new hippo hoodie, thanks to a thoughtful student! :)
LES ETOILES DE FRANCAIS
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1395233336.jpg)
Each week, students have the opportunity to receive an award for "Etoile de Francais" (French Star of the week). Students can receive clothespins for speaking in French throughout the day. Once they earn three clothespins, they are awarded with a certificate for their efforts! This week, we set a record with ELEVEN French superstars! BRAVO les amis!
A CLASS FULL OF BUCKET FILLERS!
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1392993967.png)
With Pink Shirt Day quickly approaching and Valentine's Day just behind us, it is the perfect time to discuss the importance of Bucket Filling! Throughout the next week, we will be discussing the importance of filling our invisible buckets with good thoughts and feelings. Every time you say or do something caring or thoughtful, you add good thoughts and feelings to someone's bucket. When you fill someone else's bucket, you also fill your own! And the more you fill buckets, the quicker your bucket fills up!
The students have been taking this very seriously, helping out one another and saying kind things! Our 'visible,' homemade buckets are filling up quickly!

finally! 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL!
It's hard to believe we've already made it through one hundred school days! We have been counting the days (in French of course!) since the very first day of school on our classroom calendar. We celebrated today by doing a few activities that focused on the number 100! Below is a list of 100 French words that a student was able to come up with!
OLYMPIC HISTORY!
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1392045431.jpg)
It is hard to believe that 4 years have already passed since the last Olympic games in Vancouver! Many students were fortunate enough to see and even hold the Olympic Torch as it passed through Riverview!
Here is one of our very own students who had the fantastic opportunity to see what it feels like to be a torch bearer!

making change
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1391691500.jpg)
A HUGE congratulations goes out to one of our very own students who decided to take it upon herself to become a "Change Bandit Hero" and raise over $1200 for the IWK!
Not only did she do an amazing job fundraising, she also chopped off her beautiful, long, blonde hair to donate to "Angel Hair for Kids" so that someone else (who needs it) can enjoy it as much her! Check out her chic new hairdo!
Way to go!!! :)

ELASTIC CRAZY!
![Picture](/uploads/2/6/1/5/26154407/1392132749.jpg)
There is a new fad quickly spreading around the halls of Claude D. Taylor! Nearly everyday, I am welcomed with a cool, new piece of jewelry made out of elastics (and am acquiring quite the collection)! These elastic creations have rapidly evolved to include charms! Who knew elastics could turn into something so pretty!
Here are a few creations from our very own class! We have some talented bracelet-makers!
